Gas tax holidays by state: who has suspended the gas tax, and until when
4 states have their gas tax switched off right now: Indiana, Georgia, North Carolina and Ohio. The biggest break is in Indiana, 64.5¢ a gallon; the first to end is Indiana's, on Nov. 4, 2026. Utah has a smaller cut instead of a full holiday. Rates and dates checked against each state's official notice on Oct. 21, 2026.

State excise tax per gallon from each state's revenue department. Local taxes, the federal tax and, in North Carolina, the 0.25¢ inspection tax are not included and are still charged. Indiana's figure combines the excise and the gasoline use tax as listed by the EIA for July 2026; the use tax rate changes monthly.

Did the cut reach the pump?
A tax holiday only helps if stations pass it on. The weekly EIA survey is the only official price series, so this compares each state with the U.S. average over the same weeks: if the state fell by more than the country, the gap is the part that looks like the tax cut. It is a weekly average, not your station, and other things move prices too (refinery outages, the Midwest's price cycles).
Ohio
−32.3¢state vs. U.S., first week without the tax
Week before the holiday (Sept. 28): $4.263. Latest (Oct. 26): $4.380, +11.7¢, while the U.S. average moved −19.6¢. First week without the tax (Oct. 5): −43.4¢ against −11.1¢ nationally. Since the week before, the gap versus the U.S. is +31.3¢. Tax removed: 38.5¢. Figures from the EIA's own weekly survey for the state.
Georgia
−12.5¢Lower Atlantic average vs. U.S., first week without the tax
Week before the holiday (Sept. 28): $4.195. Latest (Oct. 26): $3.832, −36.3¢, while the U.S. average moved −19.6¢. First week without the tax (Oct. 5): −23.6¢ against −11.1¢ nationally. Since the week before, the gap versus the U.S. is −16.7¢. Tax removed: 33.3¢. Figures from the EIA's Lower Atlantic average (there is no weekly survey for Georgia alone, and other states in the region are included).
North Carolina
−0.7¢Lower Atlantic average vs. U.S., first week without the tax
Week before the holiday (Oct. 5): $3.959. Latest (Oct. 26): $3.832, −12.7¢, while the U.S. average moved −8.5¢. First week without the tax (Oct. 12): −3.0¢ against −2.3¢ nationally. Since the week before, the gap versus the U.S. is −4.2¢. Tax removed: 41.0¢. Figures from the EIA's Lower Atlantic average (there is no weekly survey for North Carolina alone, and other states in the region are included).
Not measured: Indiana (suspended on and off since April, so there is no clean week before); Utah (a 6¢ cut since July 1, too small to separate from market moves in a regional average).
What each state did
Indiana in effect
The Indiana Department of Revenue doesn't collect the Gasoline Use Tax or the Gasoline Excise Tax from Aug. 7 through Nov. 4, 2026. That's about 64.5¢ a gallon in EIA's July 2026 table: 37¢ excise plus 27.5¢ use tax, which works like a sales tax and changes every month. Diesel is still taxed. The state is reimbursing local governments for the lost road money.
Energy emergency, Executive Order 26-33 (Gov. Mike Braun, Sept. 30, 2026), renewing Executive Order 26-20. Indiana has paused gas taxes since April: the use tax from April 8 (Executive Order 26-09), the excise tax added on May 6 (Executive Order 26-11).

Georgia in effect
Collection of the state motor fuel excise tax is suspended from 12:01 a.m. on Sept. 29 through 11:59 p.m. on Nov. 5, 2026. The first order ran to Oct. 29; the Oct. 6 order extended it. Prepaid local sales tax is not suspended. 2026 rates: 33.3¢ gasoline, 37.3¢ diesel.
State of emergency, Executive Order 09.28.26.01 (Gov. Brian Kemp), extended by Executive Order 10.06.26.01. Georgia's third suspension this year: March 20 to May 19 (House Bill 1199) and May 20 to June 2 (Executive Order 05.15.26.02).

North Carolina in effect
The motor fuel excise tax is 0¢ a gallon on gasoline, diesel and alternative fuels from Oct. 10 through Nov. 30, 2026. The 0.25¢ inspection tax still applies, and sales tax treatment doesn't change. The 2026 rate it replaces is 41.0¢.
Session Law 2026-62 (House Bill 3), passed in a special session and signed by Gov. Josh Stein on Oct. 9, 2026.

Utah in effect
Not a full holiday: from July 1 through Dec. 31, 2026 the motor fuel tax is fixed at 31.9¢ a gallon instead of 37.9¢. The special fuel (diesel) rate stays at its Jan. 1, 2026 level.
House Bill 575 (2026 General Session), Fuel Tax and Supply Amendments.
Ohio in effect
From 12:01 a.m. on Oct. 4, 2026 through 11:59 p.m. on Jan. 2, 2027, the motor fuel tax drops from 38.5¢ (gasoline) and 47¢ (diesel) to 0.0001¢ a gallon, which is zero for practical purposes.
House Bill 519, emergency legislation signed by Gov. Mike DeWine.
Proposed but not in effect
Massachusetts Proposed, then dropped
Gov. Maura Healey proposed suspending the 24¢-a-gallon gas and diesel tax for two months as part of her closeout budget. The House Ways and Means redraft of the $2.35 billion spending bill, released Oct. 20 for a House vote on Oct. 21, leaves it out. The tax still applies.
A gas tax holiday is not the same as the dyed-diesel waivers several governors have signed this fall: those let farmers and loggers run untaxed off-road diesel on public roads, and they don't lower what you pay for gasoline.
Questions
Which states have a gas tax holiday right now?
As of Nov. 2, 2026: Indiana until Nov. 4, 2026 (64.5¢ a gallon off); Georgia until Nov. 5, 2026 (33.3¢ a gallon off); North Carolina until Nov. 30, 2026 (41.0¢ a gallon off); Ohio until Jan. 2, 2027 (38.5¢ a gallon off). Utah has a partial cut.
When does Indiana's gas tax holiday end?
The last day is Nov. 4, 2026, under Energy emergency, Executive Order 26-33 (Gov. Mike Braun, Sept. 30, 2026), renewing Executive Order 26-20. Unless it is extended, the state tax goes back to 64.5¢ a gallon for gasoline the next day.
When does Georgia's gas tax holiday end?

When does North Carolina's gas tax holiday end?

When does Ohio's gas tax holiday end?
The last day is Jan. 2, 2027, under House Bill 519, emergency legislation signed by Gov. Mike DeWine. Unless it is extended, the state tax goes back to 38.5¢ a gallon for gasoline the next day.
Do drivers get the full tax cut at the pump?
Not always, and not right away. Stations still sell fuel they bought with the tax included, each station sets its own price, and wholesale prices keep moving. The federal tax of 18.4¢ a gallon (24.4¢ for diesel) is still charged in every state.
Is diesel included?
It depends on the state: North Carolina: yes; Ohio: yes; Georgia: yes; Indiana: no; Utah: no. Waivers that let farmers use red-dyed diesel on the road are a different thing and don't change the pump price of clear diesel.
How this page is kept
Every rate and date in the table comes from the state's own notice: the revenue department's bulletin, the governor's executive order or the enacted bill, linked in each row. When a state extends or ends a holiday, the table changes; when the last day passes, the state moves to "ended" by itself. Pump prices are the EIA's weekly retail survey, published on Mondays.
